Stop explaining yourself when people ask you what you do for a living. Turn it into a negotiation instead. Ask them, “Is this urgent?” “What company do you work for?” “What is your current role?”
Do not answer any more questions about salary, income, or personal details. It is none of their business. It literally does not belong in their briefcase or work email, so do not hand over information like that.
Wait until the conversation closes to hand them your business card. Ask them if they had actually planned on asking you for anything specific, and what they planned on paying you.
Do not be afraid to call people’s bluff when they ask, “What do you do for a living?”
